‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to goals with the Basque club
Whenhe first time the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an teenage playing for Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he appeared in England, against Sunderland following that, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens not long later, well, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to Manchester to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, also. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the Athletic striker admits, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the second half: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, the usual talk. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At Lezama, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to the UK, this time to face Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It has become a tough year for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he says.
Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player his father and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his top-level debut in that summer, he went through a ACL injury, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.
“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the top level but each step you advance through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his first game and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but I look back on it as something positive because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
You also have to play. He left emotionally in 2020, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Particularly after last year which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
