Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen others got wounded in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence near the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who ran away after the blast was located not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location showed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had happened on a story above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to Italian media, adding that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
