Jennifer Lawrence States Discussing Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels appropriate to voice opinions countering the Trump presidency, concerned it could exacerbate unhelpful debate and further divisions throughout the nation.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Jennifer Lawrence
Speaking with media, she shared, “During the first Trump administration, I felt like I was acting frantically in a panicked state. But experience has shown, over multiple voting cycles, public figures do not make a difference in any way on who people vote for.”
The actor went on, “What’s the point? I’m just expressing personal views on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict tearing the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Lawrence has admitted freely about backing right and leftwing presidential nominees over the years. Raised by Republican parents in her home state, she voted for the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the Democratic party and explaining she recognized during Obama’s administration that supporting the GOP was undermining her own rights as a female citizen.
Past Statements
Earlier in her career, she commented that a Trump victory could represent “a catastrophic event” and publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. During the most recent election, she lent her support to Kamala Harris, “because I believe she’s a strong contender and I am confident that she will take all necessary steps to protect abortion access.”
Industry Position
Jennifer Lawrence was supported by many in the entertainment industry in her rejection of Donald Trump as a returning figure, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the electoral decisions was highlighted by his election win.
“This upcoming term appears changed,” commented Lawrence of his leadership. “Since he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for four years. He was transparent. And that’s what we chose.”
Latest Film
Lawrence is highlighting Die, My Love, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she portrays a recent parent who faces challenges with her psychological well-being in rural Montana. Speaking at a media event for the film in the film festival, she commented on Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s horrifying. What’s taking place is nothing short of a genocide and it’s awful.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by stating that she was disappointed by “the hostility in the discourse of U.S. political debates at present and how that is going to be normalised to the younger generation today. It’s going to be typical to them that politicians lie.”
The actor aimed to shift anger about the situation to decision-makers rather than actors and artists. “Concentrate on the people in charge,” she advised, in what many took to be a reference to the declaration supported by numerous arts community members to refuse engagement with specific industry bodies.
Personal Connections
The actor, who won an Oscar aged 22 for her performance in her breakout movie, is generating Oscar buzz for her performance in her latest project. Although Lynne Ramsay has rejected the narrative being interpreted as one of postpartum depression and psychological distress, the actress revealed that she connected with aspects of her role’s experience after the birth of her second son, not long after filming concluded.
“There was concern about my child,” she commented, “imagining every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I got on a medication called that medicine and I took it for two weeks and it really helped.”
Professional Experiences
The actor also spoke regarding the liberating necessity of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was expecting and couldn’t work out.
“There’s a freedom,” she commented, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “Truly, I sometimes think where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
