The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Acetaminophen Manufacturers Regarding Autism Claims

Judicial Proceedings
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump seeking election to the United States Senate, claimed the drug companies of concealing potential dangers of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the producers of acetaminophen, claiming the companies withheld safety concerns that the pain reliever presented to children's brain development.

The lawsuit follows a month after Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between taking Tylenol - alternatively called acetaminophen - throughout gestation and autism spectrum disorder in young ones.

The attorney general is suing Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the drug, the only pain reliever recommended for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he stated they "betrayed America by profiting off of discomfort and promoting medication without regard for the potential hazards."

The manufacturer asserts there is lacking scientific proof connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, knowingly endangering countless individuals to increase profits," Paxton, a Republican, declared.

The company stated officially that it was "deeply concerned by the perpetuation of misinformation on the security of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of women and children in America."

On its online platform, the company also said it had "regularly reviewed the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a verified association between using paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations acting on behalf of medical professionals and medical practitioners share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for pregnant women to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can pose serious health risks if ignored.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the utilization of acetaminophen in pregnancy, no reliable research has definitively established that the consumption of paracetamol in any period of gestation causes neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the organization stated.

The court filing cites current declarations from the previous government in asserting the medication is potentially dangerous.

Recently, Trump raised alarms from health experts when he advised pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to use Tylenol when unwell.

The FDA then released a statement that medical professionals should consider limiting the use of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism in children has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the source of autism in a limited time.

But authorities cautioned that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the consequence of a complex mix of inherited and surrounding conditions - would prove challenging.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of permanent neurological difference and impairment that influences how persons perceive and relate to the environment, and is diagnosed using doctors' observations.

In his lawsuit, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is campaigning for the Senate - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and tried to quiet the science" around paracetamol and autism.

The lawsuit aims to force the companies "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts Tylenol is safe for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the complaints of a collection of mothers and fathers of minors with autism and ADHD who filed suit against the makers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

A federal judge threw out the case, saying studies from the family's specialists was inconclusive.
